As a fan of Buzzfeed Unsolved, I am very hurt at how they treat witches in the show. The show groups all factions of the Occult and shoves them under an umbrella of evil accusations. I have watched the BU since the very beginning, since before Shane and Ryan were a duo and it's really offensive that the show has 0 respect for witches.
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE this show. I watch it on repeat, do further research and have joined fan pages - but I am losing my love for it as time goes by because of the blatant misinformation they are spreading about witches.
I have been trying to contact them for Q&As and I keep getting ignored. I posted in the official Facebook group, and my post wasn't approved. I asked why and was told it was due to the “not allowing posts about religion” in the group, but refused to tell me who I could contact regarding this problem. The person I spoke to was very rude and did not respect me in the slightest. I cannot find other witches to back me up, because I can’t discuss it in public forums - the admins refuse my posts.
I have been told not to harass Shane or Ryan on their socials, which I stressed that I didn’t want to do anyway, and told just to drop the issue. This was by the same admin of the Unsolved official group.

I decided to contact Buzzfeed directly. I do not want to lose my love for this series. I would prefer that they address the issue since I know the guys are decent people and mean no harm.
So, my question is - are any witches on here a fan of Buzzfeed Unsolved? If so, what are your opinions?
I don't know the show, never heard of it in fact, but what you're saying doesn't surprise me in the least.
ReplyDeleteIgnorance in this day and age is unforgivable! Do they do it because it gives the show better ratings I wonder?
But the show is already very popular! its so hurtful that they do not care about their viewers...
DeleteYes!!
ReplyDeleteI watched the video and in my opinion they just seem very uninformed like the rest of society. Most people equate Witchcraft and Satanism and don't know the difference. Even in today's society if you act like you're interested in anything metaphysical or occult-like then people get judgmental. I don't think they were intentionally being disrespectful.
ReplyDeleteThere is more than one video witchcraft is mentioned in a negative way. But I understand what you mean!
DeleteMy main issue is how those involved have been treating the witches/fans who call them out on it. It seems that instead of working on the issue or apologising they are either really rude of ignoring us.
I didn't see it as them purposely being disrespectful so much as not having enough knowledge on the situation. Ryan said he doesn't believe in witchcraft, but it also wasn't made clear what he though witchcraft to be. Shane on the other hand didn't seem to have any specific comments on it even though we know he probably doesn't believe in it. In fact Shane seems to choose silence over making fun of religion/spirituality in most cases.
ReplyDeleteNow as for their videos on witchcraft topics, while it's true witches aren't all evil, most of the stories are based on folklore where the witch's "alignment" is questionable. With that being said, they have to go off the original folklore and not modern day religious/spiritual practices.
I'd also like to note that in your post you stated witchcraft and Satanism is seperate. That is true, but there are and have been throughout history that work with "the witch's devil"/The Man in Black/Satan/Lucifer/etc. so assuming the folklore to be wrong may not be correct either.
I can see what you mean!
DeleteAlthough they do have to refer to certain aspects of lore etc, they can point out that this isn't how modern witches are.
One of my concerns are that some of the youngsters watching the show will be more negative towards witches in every day life, because modern witches are becoming more involved on social media etc and it helps to be educated yaknow
