No matter how hard you try, the world will always try to cut you down. No matter what you do correctly, there will always be someone to tell you that you screwed it up. It may sound cliche, but the truth is you simply cannot please everyone.
I've worked in theme parks, taxi offices & most recently a restaurant/bar. From my experience, the members of the general public are complete arseholes. Not everyone, obviously. There are some wonderful people out in the public who care a great deal about members of the service industry, and I have had the privilege to meet many of them.
You often find these people with small children, or out with their friends. Very rarely you find them aged 60 or over, with a kind heart and young eyes. The kindhearted members of the old generation are the type of people who make my day worth it. I enjoy the small reminder that most people are good.
Everyone is just looking for their purpose, and when they have found it they look for another one. Unfortunately, some of these people believe that their life is more important than everyone else's, or that their purpose is to make other people miserable.
When thinking about all of this, I discovered a method of escaping the irritation of a rude customer in the service industry.
My method is to simply realise that the negative energy is not directed at you.
Now bear with me here. I understand that when you're working and customers are rude it is very frustrating, I've been there many times.
But think about it, every time you had a complaint, was it ever about you personally?
90ish% of the time, the person has an issue with the product or the company you are representing.
Unless you are running your own business, my best advice is to disconnect your personal feelings from your work life. It'll make you a happier person.
And, if all else fails - listen to this song and remember that most people are good.
